When I read a title containing the word English and purporting to be about the British I immediately decide not to buy it! Why can't people get it right? England (and the English) are only a section of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. I'm Welsh and I don't like being lumped together with the English any more than I want to be referred to as Scottish or Irish. This habit of calling all UK citizens English is more than just quaint. It pervades politics, literature, sport - oh, everything. Just ask members of national football teams! When the FIFA was started, 4 national teams were instituted for the four parts of the UK. That tradition still holds today. And decentralization has seen parliaments in Wales and Scotland being established only recently. The English do not cultivate their customs and traditions to the standard maintained by the other parts of the UK, but admittedly, there are a lot of potty people there.

Die vorangegangenen Rezensionen waren teils positiv und teils negativ. Wie auch immer, ich fand die Beschreibung des Buches irgendwie interessant.
Also - bestellen.
Heute Morgen habe ich dann auf Seite 176 aufgehört zu lesen und das Buch zur Seite gelegt.
Der Schreibstil ist am Anfang sehr amüsant und unterhaltsam, als sich aber die Kapitel immer mehr gleichten (von Überschrift und Themawechsel mal abgesehen) ist mir dann doch die Lust auf die restlichen Seiten vergangen - dafür ist es dann doch nicht interessant/fesselnd genug.
Fazit: kein wirklich schlechter Kauf, aber nicht als Dauerbrenner zu verstehen denn ich wirklich verschlinge oder im Urlaub am Strand lese.
Allerdings hätten 200 Seiten vollkommen gereicht.

Es fällt einem schwer, nicht zu lachen, wenn die englische Leidenschaft für Schlange-stehen beschrieben wird und es fällt einem noch schwerer den Kopf nicht zu schütteln, wenn man erfährt, wie man einen Briten dazu bekommen kann, seinen Beruf zu verraten.
Ich habe Ausschnitte des Buches an der Universität gelesen, und musste mir danach einfach das ganze Buch kaufen. Wunderbar ironisch, witzig und unterhaltsam.

As an Englishman living in Germany, I have to say that "Watching the English" is extremely accurate! It made me laugh out loud on the train while reading, which as you'll see from this book is an unusual occurrence for someone from my country... This book describes the amazingly complex and intuitive set of rules by which we English live. It covers our obsessions with privacy, understatement, humour, anti-boastfulness, excessive politeness and all the other motives and societal rules behind the way we act. And, since class consciousness is irrevocably embedded in the national social fabric, all is explained relative to the various classes: lower- and upper-working, lower-, middle- and upper-middle, and upper. Non-English readers will cry "What?! Is that really true? Do the English really think and act like that?!" - and I can assure you that we absolutely do...
If your German skills are good enough and you are looking for something similar about Germany, then I recommend "Planet Germany" by Eric T. Hansen or "Ein Amerikaner im Sprachlabyrinth" by David Bergmann.

For all others this book is pure nonsense. I only got to page 77, after which I gave up. By then I had learned that only the English truly know how to discuss the weather, gossip, and have the perfect sense of humour. I sincerely recommend to the authoress to learn a foreign language and move abroad, and she'll find that her perceived unique English characteristics are duplicated world wide. Having lived in numerous countries, including the UK, and being able to speak three languages, I can tell you this book is absolute rubbish. 0/10
