One of the many refreshing things about Barack Obama is his self-deprecating sense of humour. Unfortunately, the irony of this self-comparison to Superman was probably lost on many of his dedicated followers, who clearly believe that – once in office – he can exercise a few super powers and rid the world of all its thronging ills, economic and otherwise. But as Dreams from My Father proves, Obama is no fool, and knows the cold realities that face him, even though this intelligently written book is filled with optimism and hope. Which is understandable enough; after all, what else could Obama offer?
The politicians who can actually write may be counted on one hand, but on the evidence here, Barack is among their number (he reminds us that William Faulkner said the past is never dead and buried – it isn’t even past; can you imagine Barack's predecessor in the Oval Office quoting Faulkner – unless the allusion was written for him by one of his speechwriters?). In fact the book -- Obama’s remarkable life story – was, of course, written before his destiny was irrevocably changed by his success in the US presidential election, and it is a striking account of a young man coming to terms with the problem of his identity and issues of belonging in a racially divided country (a racial division that Obama – by the very example of his success – may do a considerable amount towards healing). The son of a black African father and a white American mother, Obama details the dramatic journey that constituted his parents’ life before his own trip to Kenya to confront the sobering realties of his father’s life. It is a book about coming to terms with the past – and comparisons with writers such as Proust in such areas are not as ridiculous as they would be if almost any other politician were involved.
Dreams from My Father gives real hope that ‘dumbing down’ – in order to appeal to the lowest common denominator – will not be the hallmark of the Obama presidency. --Barry Forshaw

Barack Obama erzählt in diesem Buch sein Leben bis zur Hochzeit mit Michelle und rückt dabei so manches gerade, was sich an Vorstellungen über das Leben eines Farbigen in Amerika in meinen Vorstellungen angesammelt hatte. Er erzählt auch von den anderen Stationen seines Lebens, den Begegnungen mit Menschen aus den unterschiedlichsten Kulturen. Seine Sprache ist lebendig und ausdrucksstark, man merkt von den ersten Seiten an, dass hier ein hoch intelligenter Harvard-Absolvent am Werk war. Er flicht kleine Alltagsbegebenheiten mit Ereignissen der großen Politik zusammen, schildert Charaktere in ihrer Verschiedenheit ohne verurteilend zu werden, sucht immer wieder - auch und gerade beim eigenen Scheitern - nach dem Weg, der weiter führt, anstatt aufzugeben.
Mich hat neben der persönlichen und beruflichen Entwicklung Obamas auch interessiert, wie er seinen schwierigen Weg von einem vagen Vermuten, dass es einen Gott geben müsste, zu seiner Begegnung mit Jesus Christus in diesem Buch schildert. Auch dieser Aspekt seines Suchens und Findens wirkt auf mich ganz und gar ehrlich (womöglich waren seine Wahlkampfmanager nicht so glücklich mit diesen Passagen des Buches).
Sein soziales Engagement bringt Barack Obama zwangsläufig zur Zusammenarbeit mit Kirchen ganz verschiedener Prägung, denn in Amerika ist es noch so, dass sich die Gläubigen der christlichen Kirchen in erster Linie um die Nöte ihrer Mitmenschen kümmern, statt dies - wie bei uns - ... weiter

In der enthusiastischen Stimmung nach Obamas Wahl habe ich mir dieses Buch des künftigen Präsidenten der USA besorgt. Es handelt sich um seine Autobiographie - aber das Erstaunliche ist, dass sie bereits 1995 erschienen ist, von einem Niemand also, der gerade einmal am Anfang seiner 30er sein Jurastudium beendet hatte und sich eine einjährige Auszeit nahm, um dieses Buch über sein Leben und seine Familie zu verfassen. Gleichwohl ist es von einem Menschen verfasst, der sich zu Höherem berufen fühlt und der weiß, dass er es erreichen wird.
Natürlich hat auch ein Obama vor 14 Jahren nicht geahnt, dass in ihm ein künftiger Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten schlummert. Und so handelt es sich - gemessen an der späteren staatstragenden Bedeutung des Autors - um ein außergewöhnlich offenes und privates Buch. Ein außergewöhnlicher Fall, denn normalerweise erscheinen solche Lebenserinnerungen erst im nachhinein und sind versehen mit allen Finessen der Distanzierung, die das Amt nun einmal mit sich bringt.
Hier lesen wir die erfrischende Geschichte eines Unbekannten, welchem allerdings aufgrund seiner ungewöhnlichen familiären Geworfenheit eine außergewöhnliche Lebensgeschichte blüht. Barack ist der einzige Sohn einer amerikanischen jungen Frau und eines aus Kenia stammenden schwarzen Studenten. Die Ehe geht bald in die Brüche und die Mutter, die offenbar zu exotischen Lebensformen neigt, nimmt mit ihrem kleinen Jungen Reißaus nach Indonesien, wo sie mit ... weiter

Dreams from My Father is a greatly inspiring memoir. Controversial, though it is, the story reflects the soul of a man who is open to his identity. In this book, Obama argues with himself and comes to terms with his identity. You will not regret getting into the pages of this page turner that bear the hallmarks of a classic. It is a recommendable read.

In Barack Obama's "Dreams from My Father" I discovered a fascinating brain and an accepting mind that came to terms with his dual inheritance. He provided us with an insight of the African-American experience, of the hopes and dreams of the people, of the realities they confronted and of their failures.
In his inspiring appearance at the Democratic convention, Obama emerges as a rising star in the American politically scene, a figure with a strong personality that is easy to relate to. The speech was very moving.
The fact that this book was written before Obama gained so much political popularity, is the reason why it is so authentic, unlike many of the autobiographies we read. And as a mulatto, this book reminded me of Disciples of Fortune. It is so amazing how the heroes in these books came to terms with their inheritances.
